What is it ? – A Hotel (The Lovat) / Restaurant (Station Road) way up in the wilds of bonnie Scotland, a five-minute walk away from the mysterious Loch Ness.
What`s Cooking ? – Locally foraged and supplied ingredients from the very best of Scotland`s producers….fresh seasonal fish and game at their very best.
Who`s Cooking ? – Chef Sean Kelly worked in Corsica and Italy before spending 5 years in the Restaurants of Paris – Need I say any more ? he`s fantastic.
What should I expect ? – I regularly admired Chefs stunning creations on his instagram profile (@stationroadlochness) – true works of art. Always wanting to try them for myself but then looking at the map and realising it was such a bloody long drive to get there. We left home at 9am and headed up towards Glasgow and on to the spectacular scenery of Loch Lomond. We stopped off at beautiful Glencoe (The Lake district on Steroids) to visit the scene from Skyfall (I`m a James Bond freak) , drove on to Fort William and finally arrived at Fort Augustus around 6pm….9 hours on the road.
Must Order dish – Chef specialises in Game cookery so sampling a game course here is a must (if you`re into that). The house signature is a Silver Birch dessert , a very realistic creation which is a total work of art.
What will it cost me ? Mor Tasting Menu – £135 per person (9 courses). Beag Menu (3 courses with snacks) – £90 per person. We actually booked in for an all-in-one special deal , a “Gastronomic break” which included 2 nights in a lovely room , full Scottish breakfast , 3 course dinner on the first evening and Tasting menu on the second. Total cost was – £834 so might be worth checking it out. Contact the hotel before you book as they might have an irresistible offer on.

My thoughts – Why has this place not got a Michelin star ? it beggars’ belief, it really is that good.

What`s the Atmosphere like ? It was our perfect little Gastronomic escape. The hotel was cosy, clean and a really great base for exploring Loch Ness and the local villages. We were hundreds of miles from home, and this was our first stop before heading off West to the isle of Mull , Oban and Portpatrick – An awesome start to our foodie adventure.
What`s good ? Autumn vibes , falling leaves , Wild Mushrooms and an abundance of fresh wild Game. Chef even directed us to his secret Wild mushroom grounds which is a very rare thing to do. For a food lover this restaurant is the business.
What`s even better ? – I requested Grouse and Venison in advance and Chef managed to get me both …WOW.
Any Negatives Would I return ? – It`s a very long journey to get there and to be totally honest I thought my trip would be a one-off visit. Now i`m home again with my memories and looking at pics of the food. In a nutshell – YES , i`d definitely do the long, long journey to eat there again – and hopefully soon , it`s a stunning road trip up there in the Scottish highlands.
